Baltimore sues to block move of Preakness Stakes

BALTIMORE (AP) Baltimore has ratcheted up a bitter dispute with the owners of a historic racetrack in an effort to seize a nearly 150-year-old course and block the move of one of America's premier horse races out of the city where it was first run in 1873.

Under state law, the Preakness Stakes - the middle jewel of the Triple Crown of thoroughbred horse racing - can be moved to another track in Maryland "only as a result of a disaster or emergency." But the Canada-based development company that owns and operates the rundown Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore has made it abundantly clear that it wants to move the storied race out of the city. (MORE)

Baltimore mayor sues to block move of Preakness Stakes

BALTIMORE (AP) Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh has sued the owners of Pimlico Race Course in an effort to seize the horse racetrack and block the move of the Preakness Stakes out of the city.

News outlets report that on behalf of the city, Pugh is also trying to prevent the Stronach Group from using state bonds to fund improvements at Laurel Park, which is being eyed as the new home for the second jewel in the Triple Crown. (MORE)

Santa Anita set to resume racing on March 29

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) Santa Anita plans to resume racing on March 29, pending approval of new safety and medication rules by the California Horse Racing Board.

Racing has been suspended since March 5 at the track, where 22 horses have suffered fatal injuries since Dec. 26. Limited training is being allowed on the main dirt track while testing of the surface and new rules involving safety and medication are being worked out. (MORE)

Prosecutors look into spate of horse deaths at Santa Anita

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) Investigators with a prosecutors' office have been assigned to help look into 22 recent horse deaths at Santa Anita, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County district attorney's office said Friday.

The investigators will work with the California Horse Racing Board as it probes the deaths, district attorney spokesman Greg Risling said. (MORE)

Santa Anita to ban medication, whips on race days

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) Santa Anita will ban the use of medication and whips on racing days after the 22nd horse fatality in 2 1/2 months occurred at the historic track Thursday.

The move by owner The Stronach Group would make Santa Anita the first racetrack in the nation to impose such restrictions in a sport that has taken repeated hits for drug and safety issues while struggling to maintain its fan base and attract younger gamblers. (MORE)

CHELTENHAM, England (AP) Altior enhanced his reputation as jump racing's biggest superstar by winning the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival for a world record-equaling 18th straight victory.

Racing in strong winds that nearly led to a cancellation of Day 2 of the prestigious meeting, Altior overcame an early mistake at the water jump and pressure from two rivals in the closing stretch to win by a length in the feature race on Wednesday. (MORE)
